Something needs to be negotiated as we enter Libra’s lunar cycle, beginning with today’s New Moon. Libra is an air sign with a focus on relationship, connection and justice. Symbolized by the scales, Libra seeks to balance the extremes by looking for middle ground. The middle ground, the neutral space is where the connection point resides. From there balance can easily flow, back and forth, in harmonious movement. It is when the scales are tipped too much at one extreme that things can get ugly. Often to rebalance the scales, dramatic action is needed. Something must shift or else the entire system can be toppled.
Sometimes, toppling is part of the shift in the bigger picture. At this New Moon, this action is delivered through a conjunction to Mars, the mythological god of war. Mars in Libra is ready to make the moves that will initiate a potentially powerful shift in how we perceive and align within our social and relational spheres. That thing that feels so stuck? It’s ready to be moved out of the way. How that happens might look different to everyone depending on personal factors. We could explode, implode, burn it all down.
We can debate and polarize and spin our wheels. Or we can look at all sides of the issue, communicate our needs and make space to listen first and then act with clarity of vision and the wellbeing of all in mind. Mercury retrograde reminds us to slow down and not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Mercury retrograde is always a great time to look within and observe how our own behaviors and perceptions are creating biases and projections that might be coloring the circumstances. Often when things feel stuck in the external world, it reflects something within ourselves that refuses to be acknowledged. Mercury retrograde gives us a chance to notice these hidden patterns.
All relationships are a dance. Dancing requires a balance of resistance and surrender, of push and pull, of tension and release. In the body, when one muscle engages, another one must let go. This creates the dynamic expression of movement. Relationships work similarly. They are meant to be supportive and work through give and take. Issues arise when the flow becomes blocked or limited because of rigid identifications to polarities at the extremes. It’s like trying to dance without having any joints, or being frozen to the ground. The expression of the relationship becomes limited and paralyzed causing those within it to experience suffering and a feeling of being stuck.
Release comes when those rigidified aspects of self are set free and placed back into the motion of the larger container of the relationship. In other words, to change a pattern within a relationship, we must be willing to change ourselves first. The Libra New Moon asks us to get real about the imbalances in our relational lives and what we can do to regain harmony where it has been lost. Each of us has the power to impact personal change at this time. No one is without accountability. We can’t change others, but when we harness our creative energy to truly claim our own authenticity, not for ego reasons but to align with the truth of our highest dharma, then we may find ourselves singing in empowered harmony with ourselves, the world, and each other.
